According to reports, at least 600 people
died between October and December 1986 in the fighting between Amal
and Palestinians. [ Keesing's Record of World Events, Volume
XXXIII, March 1987, p. 35023.] On 13 August, fighting between the
PLO and Amal began again at the camps of Ein al Hilwe and Mieh Mieh
(near Sidon), and continued until 11 September. [ Keesing's
Record of World Events, Volume XXXIV, January 1988, p. 35672.]
Fighting resumed in October near Sidon, and again in December at
Chatila camp (southern Beirut). [ Ibid.] Intermittent fighting
between Amal and Palestinian factions continued around the
Palestinian camps south of Beirut until mid-1988, when the Arafat
faction of the Palestinian Liberation Organization was force to
retreat to positions in Sidon after two months of battles against
members of the Abu Musa faction of Fatah. [ "Syria's hand behind
the rout of Arafat's men", Manchester Guardian, 17 July
1988.]
Please consult the attached documentation
for further information on the camp seiges.
Regarding the Hezbollah treatment of the
Palestinians, Degenhardt's Revolutionary and Dissident
Movements mentions that Hezbollah had established "something of
an informal alliance with the Palestine Liberation Organization,
based on their mutual antipathy to Israel." (pg. 216) No further
information is currently available to the IRBDC regarding Hezbollah
treatment of Palestinian refugee camps.
Please clarify your request for information
on the activities of Palestinians.
