Information on whether the Jordanian newspapers ran an article/advertisement regarding military conscription for Iraqi men living in Jordan and born between 1957 and 1962 even though these men had previously done their military service [JOR27894.E]

The following information was provided during a 28 October 1997 telephone interview with the deputy editor of the Jordan Times, an English newspaper published in Amman. The source monitors Jordanian newspapers on a daily basis.

The deputy editor never come across any article/advertisement regarding a call for military service in Iraq. The deputy editor added that such article/advertisement would make the headlines in Jordan because of the tense relations between the two countries. It is very doubtful that such an article/advertisement was ever published in Jordan.

The following information was provided during a 28 October 1997 telephone interview with a sociologist at the Department of Sociology, University of Jordan, Amman, who also monitors Jordanian newspapers daily.

The sociologist never come across an article/advertisement in Jordanian newspapers regarding military service in Iraq and expressed strong doubts that the Iraqi government would put an advertisement or an article in a Jordanian newspaper with regard to military service in Iraq.
