GREAT LAKES: Significant Interahamwe movements reported

NAIROBI, 11 June (IRIN) - Security sources in the Great Lakes region also report significant movements of Interahamwe militia crossing back into Rwanda from eastern DRC, Burundi and Tanzania. According to the reports, the movements appear to be coordinated, suggesting some degree of logistical and political organisation. There was heavy fighting in northwest Rwanda last month between the Rwandan army and rebels, for the first time since 1999.

Sources in the prefectures of Ruhengeri and Gisenyi report growing nervousness among the local population. Regional analysts have pointed out that "negative forces" such as the Interahamwe, ex-FAR, and Burundian rebels of the Forces pour la defense de la democratie (FDD) are leaving their bases in the DRC and returning to their respective countries ahead of implementation of the Lusaka peace accord which seeks to disarm and demobilise them in the Congo.
