Information on Ali Shido Abdi is limited
among the sources consulted by the DIRB. Please note the variants
in spelling Ali Shido Abdi among the different sources
consulted.
According to The Christian Science
Monitor, Ali Shido Abdi was chairman of Manifesto, which it
describes as "the only civilian group that opposed Barre ... " (19
Feb. 1991). This report does not mention whether Ali Shido Abdi was
a former ambassador.
Amnesty International included an Ali
Shiddo Abdi, described as a former ambassador to France and Saudi
Arabia, in a list of Manifesto prisoners of conscience who were
later acquitted and released (AI 16 July 1990, 1).
For additional information on the Manifesto
group, please consult the attached the December 1990 article from
The Christian Science Monitor and the report from the
Manchester Guardian Weekly. The Christian Science
Monitor refers to Manifesto's leader as Haji Ali Shido, "an
ambassador under a previous government ... ", as does the
Manchester Guardian Weekly, which spells his name as Hagi
Ali Shido (31 Dec. 1990; 6 Jan. 1991).
For information on a Somali ambassador
named Ali Shido Abdi, please consult Response to Information
Request SOM21836.E of 21 September 1995 which is available at
Regional Documentation Centres.
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
