On 11 February 2000, an official at the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary in Ottawa stated, in reply to the question whether under Hungarian law it is illegal to take a 14-year-old child out of the country during the school year, that "it is not illegal though they might have to ask permission from the school if it is not during school holidays." In reply to the question whether such a child would be permitted to return to a Hungarian school after an interruption in his or her schooling, the official stated that "the child would be permitted to return to a Hungarian school, but if it is a long interruption, then the child eventually should pass some exams" (ibid.).
