Information on the founding members of the NRC political party [NGA15521.E]

For information on the formation of the two main parties and the events leading up to the last presidential elections in Nigeria, please refer to Response to Information Request NGA15156 of 30 August 1993. This document is available at your Regional Documentation Centre.

Concerning the founding members of the National Republican Convention (NRC), information is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa. However, it may be of interest to note that the Nigerian government, under General Ibrahim Babangida, created the two parties; the National Republican Convention (NRC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to contest the June 1993 presidential elections (Reuters 8 Oct. 1989).

West Africa notes in its issue of 12-18 April 1993 that the NRC elected its national officers at its national convention on 29 March 1993 elected its national officers (604). These new officers are Dr. Ahmed Kusamotu (chairman), Dr. Bawa Salka (national secretary) to be assisted by Dr. Daniel Kalio Oju and Malam Muktar, Alhaji Yushau Mohammed Anka (national financial secretary) to be assisted by Dr. Igabi Adebo, Mr. Okey Uzoho (national publicity secretary) and Alhaji Isaac Adeboye as assistant, Chief Theo Nkire (legal adviser) and Malam Abdullahi Saidu as assistant, Alhaji Abdullahi Matori (auditor) and Mrs. Chinwe Iyesoba as assistant auditor (ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
