The Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD)
was the governing party up to mid-1986. In presidential elections
held in May 1986, the PRD lost power to the opposition
Revolutionary Social Christian Party (PRSC). [A Chronology of
Developments in the Dominican Republic since 1965, (Refugee
Status Advisory Committee, Ottawa: 1986.) p.18] After the
elections, the former President Jorge Blanco and several of his
associates were charged and convicted on corruption charges.

November 28, 1988.] According to Country Reports on Human Rights
Practices for 1988 (U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C.:
1989, p.539) "There have been accusations that political factors
are behind the prosecution of members of the previous
administration on a variety of corruption charges."
