Information on The Daily Khabrain (News) published in Lahore [PAK19514.E]

The following information was provided in a 1 February 1995 telephone interview with a deputy editor of The Daily Khabrain (News) in Lahore.

The Daily Khabrain was founded approximately 26 months ago by Zia Shahid, who is presently the chief editor. A public limited company, its shares are owned by both its employees and members of the general public. Its Lahore office is presently located at 5 Banj-Mahal Road.

A complete national newspaper of 12 pages (normal size), The Daily Khabrain covers all topics including politics, commerce and sports, and is produced daily in Lahore, Islamabad, Muzaffarabad (Azad Kashmir) and Sheiekhupura (Punjab). It employees more than 350 in Lahore, 100 in Islamabad, and has more than 500 correspondents in Muzaffarabad, Punjab and other provinces.

The Daily Khabrain receives no funding or revenue other than that generated from advertising.

The deputy editor stated that The Daily Khabrain is also known as Khabraen or Khabrain (phonetic).

The newspaper Khabraen is mentioned in LCHR's Critique in connection with the killing of one of its journalists Malik Mamraiz, in 1993 (LCHR 1994, 263).
