Information on whether supporters of former
prime minister Maurice Bishop, overthrown in 1983, face problems
upon their return to Grenada is currently unavailable to the DIRB.
According to the Political Handbook of the World: 1992 and
the Political Parties of the World, the Maurice Bishop
Patriotic Movement (MBPM) was formed in March 1984 by former
members of the New Jewel Movement (NJM) which was itself formed by
Radix and Maurice Bishop in 1973 (1992, 301; 1988, 238-239). The
MBPM is currently without legislative representation (Political
Handbook of the World: 1992 1992, 301). A 13 March 1993 Inter
Press Service article reports that the MBPM is the only
organization in Grenada which observes the anniversary of the 13
March 1979 coup by Bishop's NMJ. For further information on the
above topic, please refer to the attached documents.
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
