NIGERIA - Information on the execution of Major Mark Ukpo for his involvement in a coup attempt in May or July 1990. [NGA8840]

There is no information available to the IRBDC with regards to the execution of Major Mark Ukpo or a coup attempt in May or July 1990. However, West Africa magazine reports that there was a bloody coup attempt on 22 April 1990 led by Major Gideon Okar of the Nigerian Army (West Africa 30 April - 6 May 1990, 696). Following the trial of the coup plotters, 42 were executed in July 1990 (West Africa 6 - 12 August 1990, 2245) and another 27 more soldiers were executed by firing squad on 13 September 1990 bringing the total number of executed soldiers to 69 (West Africa 24 - 30 September 1990, 2527).
