The Movement for Freedom and Justice (MFJ)
was founded on 1 August 1990, in Accra, and seeks the return of
multi-party politics and civilian rule in Ghana (Africa Research
Bulletin Aug. 1990, 9790; Keesing's 1991 1991, 38032).
However, according to an article published in West Africa,
the MFJ was launched on 4 August 1990 (13-19 Aug. 1990, 2288).
Leaders of the Movement include Adu Boahen, former history
professor, as interim chairman; Johnny Hansen, an Accra lawyer and
former First Interior Secretary under the country's ruling
Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), as First
Vice-Chairman; Ray Kakraba-Quarshie, another Accra lawyer, as
Second Vice-Chairman; John Ndebugre, former PNDC Agriculture
Secretary, as National Organizer; and Obeng Manu, a politician, as
National Secretary; and Kwesi Pratt Jnr., a journalist, as Deputy
National Secretary (Africa Research Bulletin Aug. 1990,
9790; West Africa 13-19 Aug. 1990, 2288).
The Movement has called for a national referendum on the future political direction of the country and for equal opportunity for groups like itself to organize and advance their objectives without state security harassment and repression (Ibid.).
