Document #1231967
IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
According to a representative of the
Embassy of Iraq in Ottawa, if a male is not attending school and is
of military service age, he will be asked to perform his service
(25 June 1993). The representative added that it is important to
know why the person was not in school, adding that it usually means
the person either failed his degree or was not physically able to
attend classes (Ibid.). If a male is attending school and
has good grades, he will be exempted from military service while
studying at university (Ibid.). Once his university program
has been completed, he must perform one year military training
(Ibid.). If he finds a job that is considered to be
alternative military service, he will not have to perform the
military training (Ibid.). The representative stated that
the jobs considered to be alternative military service vary from
year to year (Ibid.).
Additional and/or corroborating information
