Information on loss of Guatemalan citizenship [GTM10355]

Please find attached a copy of the section of the Constitution of Guatemala entitled "Nationality and Citizenship." The document states that "no native Guatemalan may be deprived of his citizenship" and adds that "citizenship may be suspended, lost, and retrieved in accordance with the provisions of the law" (Blaustein and Flanz 1986, 60-61).

An information officer of the Consulate of Guatemala in Washington, D.C., stated that the current law governing nationality and citizenship is the Constitution, pointing out that citizenship is lost by acquiring a second nationality or citizenship (20 Feb. 1992). The information officer added that it is the duty of Guatemalan citizens outside Guatemala to renew their travel documents when these expire, although failing to renew them does not entail the loss of Guatemalan citizenship (Ibid.).

Additional and/or corroborating information could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC.
