IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
Article 9 of the Nationality Law of the
People's Republic of China indicates that: "Any Chinese national
who has settled abroad and who has been naturalized there or has
acquired foreign nationality of his own free will automatically
loses [sic] Chinese nationality" (The Nationality Law).
According to the Embassy of the People's
Republic of China in Ottawa (phone conversation of 16 July 1990),
there is no time limit put on the loss of Chinese citizenship. If a
Chinese citizen acquires other citizenship, however, Chinese
citizenship is lost; if a Chinese citizen is without a valid
passport, Chinese citizenship may be denied. No corroboration of
this information was found in the public sources currently
available to the IRBDC in Ottawa.
