Information on violent incidents between Muslims and Christians between 1984 and the present [MLI17895.E]

Information on violent incidents between Muslims and Christians from 1984 to the present is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa; however, general information on the relations between the two religious groups indicates that there is relatively little tension between Christians and Muslims in Mali as compared to other areas in Africa (Islam and Islamic Groups 1992, 154). For further details, please refer to the attachment from Islam and Islamic Groups.

Country Reports 1993, which is available at your Regional Documentation Centre, comments on the outcome of the government's efforts to promote religious tolerance in Mali. For details, please refer to page 174 of this document. Other general information available to the DIRB describes the religious orientations of the various ethnic groups in Mali. For details, please refer to the attachments from Encyclopedia of the Third World and Islam and Islamic Groups.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
