Information on a demonstration by students of the University of Science and Technology and the Premien College in Kumasi in late March 1990, on the arrest of students at this demonstration (as reported in the local press) and on the subsequent closing of these shools for one month [GHA12115]

In March 1990, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) held its 25th annual congress at the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Kumasi (West Africa 9-15 Apr. 1990, 573). Although the article reporting on the congress mentions various protests and disagreement between student groups and the government, no precise date of demonstrations was available (Ibid.). The DIRB does not have current direct access to the local press, which may have reported on small demonstrations taking place during the congress. The NUGS congress was reported, however, to have been "sharply critical of Jerry Rawlings' government" (BBC 18 July 1990).

Corroborative or additional information is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
