Document #1213587
IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
No information about an informal university students group called For a Just Peace (Por una Paz Justa) in Mexico City could be found among the documentary sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, in 2 June 2003 correspondence, the public relations representative of the Internet magazine Cuestiones de America, who is also a student of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM), stated that student movements in Mexico are quite volatile; groups are created and disappear without notice. Moreover, the representative added that it is difficult to search for the student group in question without more information such as the school where it is based, the name of a leader, or any other information that could be used to track down the group (Cuestiones de America 2 June 2003). Nevertheless, the representative stated that there was a group called "For a peace with justice and dignity" (Por una paz con justicia y dignidad) made up of students and members of civil society, having its origins in the Chiapas conflict (ibid.). Yet, the representative noted that this group is not only a student movement, but also a non-governmental organization (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
