Document #1190666
IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
According to a representative at the High
Commission for Trinidad and Tobago in Ottawa, Trinidad and Tobago
allows its nationals to hold dual nationality (officially referred
to in Trinidad and Tobago as dual citizenship) (22 Feb. 1993). In
actual practice, however, a Trinidadian may not be able to hold
dual nationality if the second country requires him or her to give
up Trinidadian nationality in order to acquire or retain the other
nationality (Ibid.). The representative stated that
acceptance of dual nationality has been allowed since July 1988.
Before July 1988, dual nationality was not allowed by Trinidad and
Tobago (Ibid.).
A copy of the most recent legislation
regulating nationality in Trinidad and Tobago could not be obtained
by the DIRB in Ottawa in time to meet the deadline requested. You
may, however, contact the Trinidadian immigration office in Toronto
for additional details.
Additional and/or corroborating information
could not be found among the sources currently available to the
DIRB.
