3) Information on this subject is currently unavailable to the IRBDC. However, the following information on the arrest, acquittal or death of a person charged with the murder of Harchand Singh Longowal whose first two names are Nirmal Singh could be noteworthy.
Reuters reports the arrest of two "top extremist" Sikhs: Kanwaljit Singh Sultanwind and Nirmal Singh Numma (18 Oct. 1989). Nirmal Singh Numma was shot dead while trying to flee, according to the source.
Elaborating on the trial of three Sikhs for their alleged participation in the murder of the Indian Army Chief of Staff "who ordered a military assault on Amritsar's Golden Temple," the United Press International refers to the acquittal of Nirmal Singh "at the end of the lengthy closed trial held within a prison" (21 Oct. 1989).
A Reuters release reports on the kidnapping of a Romanian diplomat by a militant Sikh organization (the Khalistan Liberation Force) in October 1991 (12 Oct. 1991). The kidnappers demanded the release of five militant Sikhs, two of whom had been convicted of killing the former Army Chief while another one had been a suspect in the murder of Harchand Singh Longawal (Ibid.).
Reuters later reported the release of a kidnapped Romanian diplomat by his Sikh kidnappers (27 Nov. 1991, 2). The source cites the Indian Home Minister as stating that no deal was made for the release while a police official referred to "some unspecified behind-the-scene discussions" (Ibid.).
