In addition to the information provided in
Response to Information Request NIC11565 of 26 August 1992, the
following information was provided by the director of the
Comisión Permanente de Derechos Humanos de Nicaragua (CPDH)
(26 Oct. 1992).
The structure and operation of El
Güegüense is not publicly known. The group appears to be
formed by, or at least focused on, students and could be linked to
the most radical sectors of the Sandinistas. Tom s Borge is a
prominent figure in these sectors, which include members or former
members of the state security apparatus. El Güegüense has
surfaced as recently as early-1992 when, amid graffiti appeared on
walls under its name.
The group El Güegüense has not
been blamed or held responsible for any violent actions recently.
The CPDH, however, received reports around August 1990 of death
threats made by El Güegüense against a former member of
the military who had been imprisoned following accusations of
conspiracy. The death threats were reported to the CPDH by the
relatives of the man, who fled the country after receiving the
alleged threats.
Additional and/or corroborating information
could not be found among the sources currently available to the
DIRB.
