Treatment of National Action Party (PAN) supporters in Veracruz by the authorities (1994-January 2000) [MEX33528.E]

No information on the treatment of National Action Party (Partido Acción Nacional, PAN) supporters in Veracruz could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, according to a 26 May 1996 AP report, Jorge Garcia Morales, the PAN mayor of Tlacotepec, Veracruz, was fired upon by unidentified gunmen as he drove in his car. He was reported to be unharmed in the attack (ibid.). The AP report further stated that "party officials in Veracruz said that several other PAN leaders there have received telephone threats" (ibid.).
