Further to the information already
available through your Regional Documentation Centre, please find
attached several documents which refer to the Honduran Patriotic
Front (FPH) and at least one trade union federation reportedly
affiliated to the FPH. The attachments indicate that the FPH was an
active electoral alliance in the early 1980s, although it failed to
win seats in the Honduran congress. The available reports do not
provide a detailed list of parties and organizations that formed
the FPH. However, one document describes the FPH as:
an alliance of some 30 small groups that included the Communist
Party of Honduras and the Communist Party of
Honduras-Marxist-Leninist (Partido Comunista de
Honduras-Marxista-Leninista - PCH-ML), which had been organized
some years earlier by a number of Maoist-oriented PCH dissidents
(Banks 1991, 288).
Another report states that the Communist
Party of Honduras (PCH) and the Socialist Action Party of Honduras
(PASOH) participated in the FPH in 1981 (Hobday 1990, 394-395). A
publication on trade unions states that the United Federation of
Honduran Workers (FUTH), which was founded in 1981, has had links
to the FPH alliance (Upham 1992, 206). The FUTH has strongly
opposed "the pro-United States orientation of the government" and
participated in "radical politics through the Co-ordinating
Committee of Popular Organizations" (Ibid.).
Finally, a 1991 publication states, in
reference to the FPH:
After a long period of relative inactivity, interest in the
coalition is again on the rise and the FPH is currently seeking
legal recognition as a party to enter the 1994 elections (Barry and
Norsworthy 1991, 17).
