Information on SAMED, organization run by the PLO; operates businesses in Palestinian camps in Lebanon and elsewhere; to work at SAMED, would a Palestinian have to be a PLO member? [LBN5072]

In the book Palestine and the Palestinians: A Handbook published by NECEF in Toronto (1989) one finds the graph of the structure of the PLO (p. 83). Under the Finance Department comes SAMED-Industrial Organization which, in turn, has under its wings the Industrial Department. Elsewhere in the text it is stated that women have formed a large part of the workforce behind SAMED, described here as "the PLO's huge economic cooperative" (p. 67). Further mention of SAMED is found in the text of Yusuf Sayigh's article "The politics of Palestinian exile" in Third World Quarterly, (January 1987) as one of the institutions which the PLO has created to "promote [the Palestinians']... own special concerns" (p. 57). This article states that SAMED, also known as the "Children of Martyrs Workshops" gives "employment and training" to those living in the refugee camps (p. 57).

No further information regarding SAMED could be found among the sources currently available to the IRB Documentation Centre.
