Document #1144340
IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
The World's News Media states that
the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) in Addis Ababa is a state-owned
media founded in 1961 that distributes "news and features" (1991,
150). However, in an interview with the Research Directorate, the
chief editor at ENA in Addis Ababa stated that ENA has been in
business for 53 years. He explained that ENA is a "news wire
service" that serves the whole nation, has 37 branches throughout
Ethiopia, and subscribes to Reuters and Agence France Presse (11
June 1998). The editor said that he is not aware of any arrests of
ENA employees and /or journalists by the Ethiopian authorities
(ibid.).
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is
not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any
particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
