Quoting the Ghana National Commission on Culture, The Washington Post reported that the freeze on the activities of Jehovah's Witnesses remains in force (2 February 1991). According to Inter Press Service, since their arrival in Ghana, the Jehovah Witnesses have been often in the news, clashing with every one of the nine governments that have ruled Ghana since independence in 1957 (26 December 1989). This source further reported that clash occurred when a number of the sect's school children were sacked on the orders of a district secretary because they refused to salute Ghana's flag as do other pupils (Ibid.).
