Regarding the police secret police, please
find enclosed in article from The Globe and Mail. As to the
military intelligence section of the Polish Ministry of Defence, on
18 October 1989, the Polish government announced that the budget of
the Defence Ministry would be cut. This cut would include a shift
of food and medical supplies away from military units, into the
civilian sector. The report did not mention whether or not the
intelligence sector would be reduced. [ "Solidarity government in
Poland to cut military outlays, subsidies," The Globe and
Mail, 19 October 1989, p. A16.] A source at the Department of
National Defence states that the military intelligence section
still exists and functions much as it has previously. Additional
information could not be obtained over the telephone but the IRBDC
is waiting for a response to written questions submitted.
