Follow-up to ROM31088.E of 10 February 1999 on reports of adoptions of girls from orphanages, particularly in Transylvania, for purposes of sexual slavery (January 1995 - February 1999) [ROM31917.E]

An 8 March 1999 letter sent to the Research Directorate by the programme officer of the Child Protection Programme of UNICEF's Bucharest office states:

Fifth question [whether there have been any reports of girls adopted from orphanages in Romania, particularly in Transylvania, for the purposes of prostitution or sexual slavery]: There are no official reports. Anyway, beside rumours or speculations, there are no reliable data for proving a direct relationship between "girls adopted from orphanages in Romania, particularly in Transylvania, for the purposes of prostitution or sexual slavery."

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
