Information on Hezbe Ranjbaran (Party of Toilers or Toilers' Party) [IRN20202.E]

The attached BBC report contains the text of a radio broadcast of an Iranian opposition group which refers to the Toilers' Party of Iran as a splinter group of the Tudeh Party (30 May 1985).

Referring to Iranian political parties following the 1979 Iranian revolution, Mehrdad Mashayekhi states that "the pro-China, Revolutionary Organization [of the Tudeh Party] (later called Ranjbaran), defined its strategic slogan as "not America, not Russia, an independent and self-reliant Iran" (1992, 107).

According to Reuters, the Iranian Guidance (Information) Ministry banned a political journal called Ranjbar (The Toiler) in 1981 (15 Mar. 1981). Reuters adds that Ranjbar is the organ of the Toilers' Party, "a tiny pro-Chinese group" opposed to the governing Islamic Republic Party (IRP) (ibid.).

The Christian Science Monitor refers to the 1980 closure of the offices of several political groups, including the Ranjbar[an] (Toilers) Party by "the street mob of the Hizbollahi" (8 Aug. 1980).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
