Current information on treatment of deserters. [SLV9019]
In addition to the information contained in previous responses to
information requests on the subject, references to the current
treatment of deserters could not be found among the sources
currently available to the IRBDC.
For your information, please find attached a copy of a document
sent to the IRBDC by El Rescate Human Rights Department, a
California-based organization dedicated to monitoring the situation
in El Salvador. The attached document provides a compilation of
news items that contain references to army and guerrilla deserters,
from 1987 to 1991. The two news items referring to the arrest or
capture of deserters at their home are based on information given
by the opposition Human Rights Commission of El Salvador (CDHES):
one case, a deserter from the Fifth Infantry Brigade, was
reportedly captured by members of the Civil Defense; the other, an
army deserter, was reportedly captured by men in civilian clothes.
The latter case is also mentioned in the Response to Information
Request No. 4047.
