Update to Response to Information Request AUT27178.E of 25 June 1997 on the significance of the stamps and dates the Austrian authorities insert into the last two pages of a foreigner's passport, and whether the stamps indicate that the passport holder was issued an Austrian visitor's visa [AUT27716.E]

A letter sent to the DIRB on 30 July 1997 by the Consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Ottawa states:

As far as the stamps in the passport according to your sample are concerned, they show that the person has applied for an Austrian visa. It cannot be determined whether or not the visa had been granted to the applicant unless the applicant's name will be given.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
