IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
In a 20 October 1995 letter addressed to
the DIRB, the Press and Information Office of the Republic of
Cyprus in Toronto stated that in the 1980s the following four radio
relay stations were operational in Cyprus: an American station in
Karavas, which is under Turkish rule; a BBC station in Zygi; SOMERA
station in Paralimni (Protaras); and the British Forces
Broadcasting Service (BFBS) in Dekelia Garrison. The letter adds
that, "neither the [Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation] nor anyone
else in Cyprus was involved in the creation of programming for the
above stations" (20 Oct. 1995).
According to an official of the Press and
Information Office of the Republic of Cyprus in Toronto, SOMERA is
a Monacan station, that broadcasts in French (23 Oct. 1995). The
official did not know whether it also broadcasts in other
languages.
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
