However, the attached reports on incidents of student violence at
Jahangirnagar University in July 1993 may be of interest. According
to an 8 August 1993 United Press International (UPI) report, "on
July 29, more than 100 masked students attacked teachers at
Jahangirnagar University 11 miles (18 km) west of Dhaka, wounding a
dozen people and sending shockwaves of indignation across the
academic world." The same report indicates that following these
incidents, seven of nine universities in Bangladesh "shut their
gates" as teachers staged a one day strike to protest against these
attacks and to demand that the perpetrators be punished"
(ibid.).
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
