Information on the above-mentioned subject could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. However, the attached reports on incidents of student violence at Jahangirnagar University in July 1993 may be of interest. According to an 8 August 1993 United Press International (UPI) report, "on July 29, more than 100 masked students attacked teachers at Jahangirnagar University 11 miles (18 km) west of Dhaka, wounding a dozen people and sending shockwaves of indignation across the academic world." The same report indicates that following these incidents, seven of nine universities in Bangladesh "shut their gates" as teachers staged a one day strike to protest against these attacks and to demand that the perpetrators be punished" (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
