The only reports on Carlos Tinajero Valencia found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate refer to his assassination on the morning of Thursday, 11 September 1997. One report states that he was killed at age 48 at a car dealership in Guadalajara by a tall blond man who fired three shots and escaped (Publi.com 12 Sept. 1997). Two reports mention that four shots were fired at him from behind; police reportedly discarded robbery as a possible motive for the murder due to the nature of the killing, but a connection to land conflict was considered a possibility (El Universal 12 Sept. 1997; Acontecer Municipal Sept. 1997). All three publications refer to Carlos Tinajero as the Jalisco State Delegate (the state's top official) of the Commission for the Regularization of Land Tenancy (Comisión para la Regularización de la Tenencia de la Tierra, CORETT). El Universal reports that Carlos Tinajero was in his third year as State Delegate, adding that at the time of his killing, around 11:30 a.m., he was in the company of a woman at a car exhibit or showroom; police sources stated that he was killed with four .45 calibre shots fired from a short range, three in the back and one in the head, and that the assassin or assassins managed to escape despite the recording of their car's licence plate (12 Sept. 1997). No references to the capture of the perpetrators or to the solving of the crime could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
