IPKF killings at the Jaffna Hospital in October 1987. [LKA0525]

Events surrounding the incidents which occurred at the Jaffna hospital on the 22-23 October 1987 remain sketchy. Indian authorities denied that the IPKF shot staff or patients at the hospital, but claimed that the LTTE had killed two doctors when they resisted combatants efforts to take shelter in the hospital. [ "Rebel Attack on Patrol Killed Three, Indians Say," in The Globe and Mail, [Toronto], 24 October 1987.] An Asia Watch Report claims that LTTE members entered the hospital in an attempt to use the patients as a shield to protect themselves from attack by an IPKF unit which was pursuing them. [ Asia Watch, Cycles if violence: Human rights in Sri Lanka Since the Indo-Sri Lankan Agreement, (Washington, Asia Watch Committee, 1987), p. 61.] An undetermined number of patients and staff were reported killed in the exchange of fire between the LTTE combatants and the IPKF.
