Information on Gardo (Quardo) prison or correctional institution in Somalia [SOM11045]

The information contained in this response was provided by a former medical doctor in Hargeisa, Somalia now resident in Ottawa during a telephone interview with the IRBDC (11 June 1992). According to this source, Quardo is a small town in north-east Somalia. During the regime of Siad Barre, there was a correctional centre for juvenile deliquents but adult political detainees were also interned there. Given the current state of affairs in Somalia, the informant was not certain that this correctional institution still exists. This information was corroborated by a Somali Social Worker at the Ottawa Carleton Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) during a telephone interview with the IRBDC (11 June 1992). Corroborating information could not be found among the sources currently available at the IRBDC in Ottawa.
