Update to Response to Information Request LKA20020.E of 28 March 1995 on the status of the Eelavar Democratic Front (EDF) after the resignation of all 13 EDF members of parliament on 19 July 1990, on whether their seats remained vacant until the next general election in August 1994, and on who represented the constituents of their electoral districts [LKA20404.E]

According to an official from the High Commission of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Ottawa during a 30 March 1995 personal interview, the Secretary-General of the Eelavar Democratic Front (EDF) refused to provide any replacements for the vacant EDF seats in parliament after all of the 13 EDF members of parliament resigned their seats in July 1990 (30 Mar. 1995). The same source stated that, as a result, those seats remained vacant until the August 1994 general elections (ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
