According to the Movement for Human and People's Rights (Mouvement burkinabé des droits de l'homme et des peoples, MBDHP) in Burkina Faso,

For a number of years, there have been no more political refugees from Burkina Faso, thanks to the efforts of its civil society and, in particular, the Movement for Human and People's Rights (MBDHP).

The only person currently known to be in exile for political reasons is Captain Jean Claude Kamboule, who was forced to leave the country after the military coup on 4 August 1983.

The last exiled Burkinian to date is Warrant Officer Yacinthe Kafando, who returned on 14 August 2001; he is now facing trial before the proper courts for the reprehensible acts he committed.

In effect, any refugee who fears for his life upon returning to Burkina Faso could enlist the help of qualified civil society organizations such as ours. (14 May 2003).
