Information on the date and place of the assault on Farhana (Veena) Hayat by five gun men on November 1991 and on demonstrations held after the event [PAK12943]

At the end of November 1991, a friend of Benazir Bhutto, Farhana (Veena) Hayat, was assaulted by gunmen. According to the opposition, the rape had been organized by Irfanullah Marwat, the son-in-law of President Ghulam Ishaq Khan (Asiaweek 7 Feb. 1992; The Economist 14-20 Dec. 1991; FEER 6 Aug. 1992, 19). The assaulters had reportedly questioned the victim on the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and its members (Asiaweek 7 Feb. 1992; The Economist 14-20 Dec. 1991; AFP 28 Nov. 1991). In early December 1991, the PPP met with opposition parties to denounce the act and to demand the resignation of Nawaz Sharif's government (AFP 2 Dec. 1991). Protests over the rape of Farhana Hayat reached a peak on 12 December 1991 when rallies were called in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore and Karachi (AFP 12 Dec. 1991).
