Beyond those reports which detail anti-corruption proceedings against Peru 2000 members, reports which discuss the more general treatment of members or supporters of Fujimori and/or Peru 2000 could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. For a detailed overview of these criminal investigations, please refer to the Research Directorate's March 2002 issue paper entitled Peru: Selected Issues Since the Fall of Fujimori available at all Regional Documentation Centres and the US Department of State's Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2001 which reports that some of the criminal investigations against individuals associated with the Fujimori administration "appeared to have politically partisan overtones" (Mar. 2002, sec. 1d).
According to a 13 August 2002 Japan Economic Newswire article, Fujimori, still in "self-imposed exile in Japan," indicated that he intends to run for the 2006 presidential elections in Peru. According to this article, Fujimori stated that his supporters had created a "public relations office in Lima called Fujiprensa" to counter allegations against him and restructure his "support base" (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
