Information on the existence of the
Buccaneer Confraternity Cult, associated with the student union of
Ibadan University, could not be found among the sources currently
available to the DIRB.
Regarding the involvement of university
students in cults, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
reported the arrest of students suspected of cult membership at
Port Harcourt University (BBC Summary 22 June 1991). The Xinhua
General Overseas News Service also mentioned arrests of students at
some institutions of higher learning for their involvement in
secret societies (Xinhua 12 June 1991). As well, the Ogboni Cult
Fraternity which had been officially banned by the Nigerian
government, was reported to be operating in secrecy and engaging in
satanic practices (IRBDC 16 Mar. 1992).
Additional and/or corroborative information
on the requested subject could not be found among the sources
currently available to the DIRB in Ottawa.
