Information relating specifically to
student unrest at Edo State University is currently unavailable to
the DIRB in Ottawa. Student riots, however, were reported at many
Nigerian university campuses in 1992 (DIRB 28 Apr. 1993). According
to the Xinhua General Overseas News Service, a college of education
near Benin was closed indefinitely following student riots to
protest the irregular supply of potable water and electricity on
the campus (8 May 1992). A report by Radio Nigeria Network stated
that the University of Benin was closed indefinitely after the
students boycotted lectures (14 May 1992).
Eleven students were reportedly arrested in
Edo state for illegally carrying weapons (Xinhua 3 Apr. 1993).
