Information on a party or group known as the Somali National Union (SNU), which apparently represents the interests of the Reer Hamar or minority tribes in general, and whether or not this group participated in a peace conference in Ethiopia and on the circumstances of its participation or non-participation [SOM27138.E]

According to The Price of Peace: Somalia and the United Nations 1991-1994, the Somali National Union (SNU) was formed in 1993 by the Bajuni, and is headed by Mohamed Rajis Mohamed (Gilkes 1994, 150-51). Reportedly, the SNU was created in "anticipation of the Addis Ababa Conference in 1993 to boost the number of organizations supporting Ali Mahdi and ensure that General Aydeed's supporters would remain in a minority" (ibid.). However, this source does not indicate whether the SNU participated in the Addis Ababa Conference. Information on whether the SNU participated in the Addis Ababa Conference and on the conditions of its non-participation could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.

For additional information on the SNU, please consult the attached document.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
