Information on whether there are differences between the Popular Defence Forces (PDF) and the regular armed forces with respect to military service and on whether there are exemptions from military service which are applicable to either force [SDN12663]
According to
Sudan Update, "every Sudanese between 18 and
30 years of age is subject to military service. The service would
be in the areas such as the armed forces, other regular forces,
development projects and economic and social projects" (8 Apr.
1991).
A representative of the Embassy of the Sudan in Ottawa states that
military service is compulsory for every male Sudanese (2 Feb.
1993). The representative holds that certain individuals are
exempted from military service including students and the sole male
child of a family. The representative adds that the Popular Defence
Forces (PDF) recruit volunteers only; the above-mentioned
exemptions are not applicable to the PDF.
Additional and/or corroborating information on the above subjects
is currently unavailable to the DIRB.
