Information on "Mahmoud Saleh" [Mahamuud Saleebaan], a sub-clan of the Majerteen, and their treatment in Somalia [SOM11915]

Mahamud Saleebaah is a sub-clan of the Majeerteen (Laitin and Samatar 1987, 32). Specific information relating to the treatment of the Mahamud Saleebaah sub-clan is currently unavailable to the DIRB. Although there are no reports of a particular clan or sub-clan that is a target for harassment, it is important to note that the situation in the whole of Somalia is chaotic. According to the Economist , Somalia is a "swarm of bees" (9 Oct. 1992). Agence France Presse describes Somalia as "l'enfer" (4 Oct. 1992), and, according to Amnesty International,
Somalia is a human rights disaster. Individuals continue to be targeted for deliberate killings solely on the basis of clan membership. The country is in a state of civil war between numerous armed groups. The spectre of devastating famine looms over the entire country. The ICRC states that about two million Somalis are at risk of death by starvation (27 July 1992, 5-6).

West Africa, reports that the situation inside Somalia is desperate and that nearly three million people are displaced (23 Aug. 1992). Fighting has been reported in northern Mogadishu and the southwestern town of Brawa (AFP 1 Oct. 1992; 29 Sept. 1992).
