Information from 1980 to the present on the Sri Lanka Central Transport Board, its structure, political affiliation, history, leadership responsibilities and any significant events in which it was involved [LKA22759.E]

Information on this organization is scarce among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

According to The Europa World Year Book 1995, the Sri Lanka Central Transport Board (SLCTB) was founded in 1958 and is a "nationalized organization responsible for road passenger transport services consisting of a central transport board and 10 regional transport boards" (1995, 2850).

The Encyclopedia of the Third World attachment, however, states that the state-owned Sri Lanka Transport Corporation has a "monopoly of road and bus transportation" (1992, 1790).

According to the 1990 Sri Lanka: A Country Study attachment the Ceylon Transport Board was the sole organization in charge of providing public passenger road transport from 1957 to 1978 (1990, 147). In 1978, when private buses were permitted to operate once more, it was replaced by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and nine regional boards (ibid.). Please consult this attachment for further information.

For the following information, please consult: Reuters of 13 July 1989 on a strike called by the Central Transport Board Joint Action Front; Xinhua of 17 December 1988 on buses made available by the SLCTB for work connected with the presidential election of 19 December 1988; Xinhua of 22 January 1987 on security measures implemented by the SLCTB; and Financial Times of 19 June 1984 on a SLCTB contract for 200 buses that was won by Lanka Ashok Leylandu, an India-Sri Lanka joint venture company.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
