Dozens Of Militants, Three Troops Killed In Northwest Pakistan

September 16, 2014

Pakistan's army says it has it killed 31 militants in air strikes and clashes on the ground near the border with Afghanistan.

Three soldiers also died in the fighting.

A statement on September 16 said the air strikes took place in the Tirah Valley of the Khyber tribal region, killing 20 militants and destroying two ammunition depots.

The military also said a group of militants launched a cross-border attack at a military post in the North Waziristan tribal district, sparking a shootout that killed 11 insurgents and three troops.

The army launched in June an offensive in June aimed at clearing North Waziristan of insurgents.

It says it has killed more than 1,000 militants and lost nearly 100 soldiers in the operation, but the numbers cannot be independently verified.
