Bomb Hits Pakistani Bus Carrying Shi'a, Killing One

August 17, 2012
At least one man has been killed and a dozen injured after a bomb hit a bus carrying Shi'ite Muslims in the city of Karachi.

The bus was carrying around 40 Shi'ite students to an annual anti-Israel protest rally in the southern port city.

It came just one day after gunmen on August 16 dragged more than 20 Shi'a off buses near Gilgit in northwest Pakistan, lining them up and shooting them dead.

The incident was strongly condemned by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who labeled it an "appalling attack."

Pakistani human rights groups say ethnic, sectarian, and politically-linked violence in Karachi, Pakistan's financial capital, has left at least 1,100 people dead so far this year.
