Honduras: State must ensure access to justice for victims of post-election repression

One year after the Honduran security forces began their repression of those involved in mass post-election protests, Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International, said:

“We reiterate our call for investigations into all cases of unnecessary or excessive use of force by the Honduran authorities during the post-election period last year, including killings, arbitrary detentions and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The people responsible for this brutal repression must be brought to justice without further delay.”

“We also urge the Honduran authorities to ensure that all those still awaiting trial for alleged acts of violence during the protests enjoy all due process guarantees and that the criminal justice system is not misused to silence dissenting voices.”

“In a regional context characterized by a reduction of spaces for civil society and attacks on freedom of expression, we reiterate that states have an obligation to guarantee the right to peaceful protest.”
