Information on the current status of the "Progressive Leftist Youth Party" [TUR12572]

Information on the Progressive Leftist Youth Party is currently unavailable to the DIRB. However, please find bellow infomation on similar leftist youth groups in Turkey.

Documentation Réfugiés reported that the extreme leftist group called DEV YOL (Revolutionary Path) emerged from a youth movement called DEV GENC (Revolutionary Youth) (10-19 May 1988, 3). DEV YOL supported political violence and was extremely active in the 1970s; however, it is now almost nonexistent (Ibid.).

According to Revolutionary and Dissident Movements, the DEV YOL organization occupied an important position in many small villages before the military takeover in the 1980s (1988, 377). In 1982, an attempt to revive the DEV YOL group in Turkey failed, as many hundreds of DEV YOL supporters were arrested and tried on various charges (Ibid.).

DEV SOL ( Revolutionary Youth) emerged from the DEV YOL group in 1977 (Documentation-Réfugiés, 17 Dec. 1992-5 Jan. 1993, 26). DEV SOL is one of the main non-Kurdish armed groups in Turkey (Ibid.). The group mainly recruited students (Ibid.). DEV SOL was the first extreme left-wing group that publicly opposed the military regime set up on 12 September 1980 (Revolutionary and Dissident Movements 1988, 377). Many of DEV SOL members were imprisoned and/or sentenced to death after the 1980 coup (Documentation-Réfugiés, 17 Dec. 1992-5 Jan. 1993, 27). Some of the detainees were released from prison in 1991 after the Amnesty International intervention (Ibid.). M. D. Karatas is the current leader of this organization (Ibid.).
