Information on Captain Aw-Gaas of Siyad Barre's Red Guard [SOM17605.E]

Information on this specific subject is currently unavailable to the DIRB. However, a News from Africa Watch report on Somalia mentions that an Ibrahim Abdi Nur, also know as "Af Gaab," was the head of the HANGASH (1990, 58). The HANGASH, a
"Somali acronym for the military police, as distinct from the regular secret service, the NSS" (National Security Service), was one of the security agencies under Siad Barre. This source states that "the HANGASH acquired formidable powers over civilians and became even more feared than the NSS" (ibid., 47).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
